Commodity market impact on producer sentiment

The February Purdue/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer dropped for the first time in three months and an ag economist says they are keeping a close eye on what could impact where producer sentiment is headed.  “Planting decisions,” he says.  “That’s going to send some market signals through the commodity market.”

Purdue’s David Widmar says movement in the commodity market could impact the early part of the 2017 growing season.  “Will we see some moderation,” he says.  “Commodity prices have actually trended higher post-harvest.  Which has been a benefit to producers with grain in the grain bins.  Do we moderate there or do we see some softening as we go into the spring or will we see some rallies.”

He tells Brownfield the spring rally in the soybean market during the 2016 planting season carried over into corn through mid-June of last year.
