Clock is ticking on McKalip, Taylor nominations

US Senator Chuck Grassley says time is running out to get two key trade positions confirmed before the calendar turns to 2023.

The Iowa Republican tells Brownfield he’s calling for swift confirmations of Doug McKalip as Chief Ag Negotiator within the Office of the US Trade Representative and Alexis Taylor as the USDA’s Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs.

“If they don’t, then it goes back to the White House and we have to start over again next year,” Grassley told farm reporters this week. “It doesn’t carry over from one Congress to the next. (Joni) Ernst and I are working hard on both of those.”

The positions have been vacant for two years, and Grassley says American agriculture needs experienced leaders representing farmers in international negotiations.
