Cinnamon Ridge Farm honored for sustainability

An Iowa dairy farmer has been recognized for his sustainability efforts by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.

John Maxwell of Cinnamon Ridge Farm in Donahue, Iowa, says he turned to cover crops years ago out of necessity.

“Cover crops all started many, many years ago because I was very poor and I needed a feed source.”

He then started to notice additional benefits like preventing soil erosion, nutrient reduction and increased milk production from less acres.

The farm also rescues food from the landfill by using coffee creamer in the dairy’s ration.

Maxwell is one of three farmers to receive this year’s Outstanding Dairy Farm Sustainability Award.
