Chobani identifies mold species

Chobani says through extensive testing and expert consultation, they now know that the mold found in the Greek yogurt they recalled is a species called Mucor circinelloides. It is not considered a foodborne pathogen. Randy Worobo, professor of food science at Cornell University says the mold is commonly associated with fruits, vegetables and dairy and “does not pose a health risk to most consumers.”

Chobani has recalled some Greek yogurt made at its Twin Falls, Idaho plant after getting complaints of mold causing the tubs to swell and “hiss”. The company actually started pulling the product from store shelves a week ago and says most has already been removed.

The recall includes all flavors Chobani Greek yogurt in various sizes with the product code 16-012 and “best-buy” dates of September 11, 2013 to October 7, 2013. The company is advising those who bought the yogurt to discard it and go to the Chobani website for a refund or replacement.
