CFI: COVID-19 fears change shopping trends
The Center for Food Integrity (CFI) says coronavirus-related isolation
and social distancing are causing unprecedented consumer behavior changes. CFI’s
Consumer Trust Insights Council, made up of food industry thought leaders and
social scientists, says buying patterns have shifted. Along with stocking up on
toilet paper, hand sanitizer, canned and frozen foods, the council says
shoppers are also buying guilty pleasures, like chocolate, cookies and
beverages.
Council members also say coronavirus is accelerating a “homing” trend
that’s been building over the last few years. Streaming video and home delivery
services mean people don’t have to go out to be entertained. CFI CEO Terry
Fleck calls this unchartered territory and advocates for continued food and
agriculture communication and transparency to help put stakeholders’ minds at
ease.
