Censky stresses importance of updated ethanol data

Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Stephen Censky says the USDA’s recent study showing reduced greenhouse gas emissions from ethanol compared to gasoline is important because it is up to date.

“We thought it was very useful to have a peer reviewed, science-based study that looks at what is our actual experience today with ethanol.”

He tells Brownfield much of the data cited by policy makers, regulatory officials and media up to this point has been outdated.

Censky says the EPA must get through the ruling of year-round E-15 use first, but he says studies like this could potentially aid in the approval of even higher ethanol blends in the future.

“As we look at the place of renewable fuels and ethanol in meeting our nations energy needs, it is important to have the updated science on the many benefits of ethanol.”

The study showed that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 39% with ethanol compared to gasoline. Censky says the US is on trend to have a 44% reduction in greenhouse gases from ethanol by 2025.
