Cargill beef plant in Alberta, Canada reduces production

One of Canada’s biggest beef packing plants has reduced production because of the coronavirus.

According to CBC News, the Cargill plant at High River, Alberta— about 40 miles south of Calgary—has temporarily laid off about half of its two-thousand employees and idled its second production shift.

A union representative said the plant, which produces hamburger patties for McDonald’s Canada, is now slaughtering 1,500 head of cattle per day, down from around 4,500.

The union rep said there have been 38 confirmed COVID-19 cases among the employees.  CBC says Cargill declined to confirm that number.
