Canada remains a consistent importer of US ethanol, IRFA says

The head of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association says Canada continues to be the most consistent market for US ethanol.

Monte Shaw tells Brownfield, “They just put into action a low carbon policy up there for their fuels and that has really been driving demand for low carbon fuels like ethanol.”

He says there are some other emerging markets. “Japan’s been a real bright spot. We worked with their government to recognize just how low carbon we are. That was actually keeping us out of the Japanese market. The UK and the EU are serious about decarbonization and then lots of different countries in Asia are doing things.”

Shaw says total ethanol exports are expected to be down from last year, but, “We’re going to hit about 1.3 billion gallons of exports. It’s still one of the four or five highest exports we’ve ever had.”

Exports averaged 120,000 barrels a day last week, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
