Canada ready to move ahead on USMCA

Canada’s foreign minister says it’s full steam ahead on the USMCA now that the U.S. is lifting steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

Chrystia Freeland told CBC Radio the Canadian government is ready to move forward with ratification of the deal. But, she said they see U.S. protectionism under the Trump administration as a continued threat and will stay on alert.

Ratification of the USMCA in this country remains in doubt given the resistance from Democrats. The House Ways and Means Committee holds a hearing Wednesday on the enforcement issues that Democrats have raised concerns about.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Agri-Pulse if the USMCA is put up for a vote and it passes the House it will “easily” pass the Senate.
