Calyxt’s high oleic soybean meal now available for dairies

The maker of a non-GMO high oleic soybean oil has partnered with a crushing facility focused on serving the dairy industry.

CEO of Calyxt Jim Blome tells Brownfield they’ve partnered with Landus Cooperative in Iowa to crush their Calyno soybeans and market the meal.

“There are studies that show, and Landus is interested in this as marketing it into the dairy segment, increased properties in dairy and milk production.”

He says their Minneapolis-based company doubled their contract acres this year and plans to expand beyond Minnesota and South Dakota further south.

“We guarantee the grower a fixed premium over their marketing price on the Chicago Board.”

Blome says they’re also partnering with SW Seeds to create more digestible alfalfa which can help in reducing greenhouse gases.

“We’ve improved the digestibility of alfalfa so that the cow gets more nutrients from every bite, about a third efficiency improvement on that and meaning a third less out in waste management and greenhouse gasses.”

And, the company is planning to release a high fiber wheat in 2022.
