Bureau of Land Management will not perform surgical sterilizations in Oregon

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced Friday it will not perform surgical sterilizations on nearly 250 wild horses in the State of Oregon.

In August, Brownfield reported that the horse rescue organization, Front Range Equine Rescue had filed a lawsuit to prevent the sterilization program saying the Bureau of Land Management would be overstepping its bounds. They said the surgical procedure was uncalled for and would have been harmful to the horses as well as permanent. Currently the BLM uses a tranquilizer to sterilize wild horses.

Front Range Equine Rescue President Hilary Wood says her group is relieved by the decision and is committed to ensuring the BLM uses “humane and reasonable methods to protect herds of wild horses.”
