Broiler-type egg sets up on week, down on year

Broiler-type set and placements continue to trend below year ago levels.

The USDA says 229.501 million broiler-type eggs were set into incubators last week, up from the previous week, but down 3% from a year ago due to industry uncertainties about sustained demand.

The average hatchability rate did decline slightly, while remaining just above 80%.

Placements of broiler-type chicks for meat production were reported at 178.882 million head, below both the prior week and this time last year due to the lower sets in recent weeks.

For 2023 to date, placements are 1% behind the 2022 pace.

The USDA’s updated annual broiler production outlook is scheduled for November 9th.
