BIO disappointed with GMO labeling bill

The head of the Biotechnology Industry Organization known as BIO says Vermont’s passage of a mandatory GMO labeling law is disappointing.

“In the case of Vermont and I think across the country, what we are seeing is legislators feel they have to do something,” said Cathy Enright, Executive Vice President for Food and Agriculture at BIO. “Constituents are demanding labels for GMO.”

Enright tells Brownfield that the companies they represent are committed to the Right-to-Know about GMO.

“We are committed to transparency, we want people to know what’s in their food,” Enright said. “What we need to do however is find a mechanism that is available to all, but that provides factual information that is based on science and not fear.”

The Biotechnology Industry Organization is the largest international trade group that represents biotech companies, academic institutions, state biotech centers and related organizations. Enright was on the program at the Ohio Agricultural Council spring meeting.
