Biden admin approves year-round E15 with 2025 start date

The U.S. EPA has finalized a rule allowing the year-round sale of E15 fuel blends in eight Midwestern states.

But, Monte Shaw with the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association tells Brownfield the rule goes into effect in 2025. “Consumers and retailers in these states have certainty on E15 sales starting in 2025 and going forward,” he said, “but we don’t know if we’re going to be able to sell it this summer.”

He says the Biden administration would need to issue another emergency waiver to allow sales this summer, but that’s not a guarantee. “For that to happen there has to be a legal justification,” Shaw said. “It’s not something that the administration can just do willy nilly.”

Darin Von Ruden, president of Wisconsin Farmers Union, says the EPA’s ruling wasn’t the decision farmers were looking for. “We wanted that to be implemented the day that was signed into law, really, because it’s going to help to clean up our air,” he said, “but also it’s going to help that ethanol business and keep moving that product out the back doors.”

Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says the EPA’s decision was a win for Midwestern states as well as biofuel producers and fuel retailers.

American Coalition for Ethanol CEO Brian Jennings called the announcement ‘better late than never’ and said ACE will continue to support E15 legislation in Congress.
