ASA using #NeedNAFTA to promote trade

The American Soybean Association is using social media to highlight the importance of trade this week.

ASA Treasurer and southwest Minnesota farmer Bill Gordon says #NeedNAFTA brings to light how important trade agreements are to U.S. farmers.

“We need more and more of these good unilateral and bilateral trade agreements with countries we’ve done business with for years.  And NAFTA was a decent program, I know there are a lot of skeptics about how it was implemented, but when you look back there were a lot of good things.  And there were maybe a few things we needed to fix.”

He urges farmers to use Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms to help empower government officials to finalize trade deals like NAFTA.

“(farmers) can raise it out here, we can keep our small communities going, but we need trade.  And we need to make these deals fair to everybody.  So keep pushing that.”

ASA tweeted today Thursday trade with Canada amounted to $20.4 billion and U.S. exports to Mexico were valued at $18.4 billion in 2017.

The U.S. would like to make a deal with Canada before October 1st.  That would allow Congress to complete its approval in time for Mexico’s President to sign the agreement before leaving office December 1st.
