ASA concerned about long-term consequences of trade war
The American Soybean Association (ASA) says if the trade war with China is not resolved soon, U.S. soybean farmers could see “irreversible consequences”.
ASA secretary and South Dakota farmer Kevin Scott says their big concern is that Brazil will permanently fill the void.
“We know that Brazil has ample acreage to increase their production,” Scott says. “We don’t really want to give them an incentive to do that.”
ASA calls for “negotiations now rather than tit-for-tat responses that hurt both countries”. Scott says farmers have given enough.
“The farmers out there, they have always given—and we really don’t want them to have to give again.”
Scott, who farms near Valley Springs, South Dakota, also serves on the board of the U.S. Soybean Export Council.
