April poultry production up on year

The USDA says April 2021 poultry production was 4.211 billion pounds, up 3% from April 2020.

Most of that was chicken at 3.782 billion pounds, also up 3% on the year, with turkey at 460.554 million pounds, 4% higher.

Slaughter totals for both chickens and turkeys were modestly higher on the year at 772.421 million and 17.164 million head, respectively, while the average live weight for all chickens was 1% heavier at 6.44 pounds per bird and the average live weight for all turkeys gained 4%, more than 1 pound to 33.58 pounds.

The USDA says the amount of poultry in cold storage at the end of April was just over a billion pounds, slightly less than at the end of March and 20% under the end of April 2021.

The USDA’s next set of poultry production estimates is out June 10th.
