Ag transportation uncertainties rise

A growing list of transportation challenges is threatening the ag industry.

American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall tells Brownfield supply chain disruptions are mounting for farmers. “The water level in the Mississippi is low, we can’t find enough truck drivers, there’s not enough labor out there, and we are still having some problems at the port,” Duvall said.

He says the looming rail strike couldn’t come at a worse time. “Our farmers got their crop in the bin now, and they are moving it along and moving it out,” Duvall said. “But they are also planning for next year and trying to prepare to bring that stuff in and having it stored and ready to put that crop in the ground next spring. We can’t afford to have an interruption in that area.”

Duvall says a strike would devastate the farm economy.
