Ag economist says U.S.-China could reach deal by March 1

An ag economist says he thinks the U.S. and China could come to an agreement by March first.

Purdue University’s Wally Tyner says it’s in the interest of both countries to reach a deal soon.

“Just in the agriculture sector alone, the U.S. loses $2.6 billion a year and China loses $2.6 billion a year,” he says. “So there’s an incentive for both sides to get together and resolve this thing.”

He tells Brownfield he thinks the U.S. and China can reach a deal in the next seven weeks as they continue trade talks.

“I think it could happen and I sincerely hope it does happen,” he says.

Trade officials met in Beijing last week to continue talks and there are various reports officials will meet again at the end of the month in Washington.

Tyner spoke to Brownfield at the Purdue University Top Farmer Conference in West Lafayette.
