African Swine Fever an ongoing challenge for global pork trade

African Swine Fever continues to disrupt global pork trade.

Christine McCracken, Senior Protein Analyst for RaboResearch tells Brownfield total availability of exportable supplies is being disrupted as the disease is spreads in parts of Germany and Italy.

“That continues to impact their ability to export product and disrupts trade there. Clearly it also impacts their domestic supply of protein.”

She says ASF is still an issue in parts of Asia but producers there are beginning to bounce back.

“It’s not really impacting total supply as much as it was just two and three years ago. They have been able to increase production in some of those larger, more commercial and bio secure facilities.”

And McCracken says while ASF has not been a problem inside the US, “With the outbreak in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, surely we have to remain vigilant on our biosecurity practices and make sure that we keep it out of our North American market.”
