86% of Iowa corn, 69% of soybeans planted

Wet weather limited fieldwork for Iowa farmers last week.

The USDA says as of Sunday 86% of the state’s expected corn crop has been planted, ahead of the five-year average of 72%. Thirty-five percent of the crop has emerged.

Sixty-nine percent of soybeans have been planted, well ahead of the five-year average of 48%. Nineteen percent of the crop has emerged, progressing from 3% last week.

Nearly all of the state’s expected oat crop has been planted with 83% emerged. The first oat condition rating of the season was 77% good to excellent.

Hay condition improved to 72% good to excellent, and 53% of pastures are in good-to-excellent shape.
