22,000+ dairy farmers enrolled in DMC for 2019

The first year of signup for the Dairy Margin Coverage program has closed and enrollment is up compared to the previous program.

Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation tells Brownfield, as of September 30th, more than 22,000 farmers enrolled in the new dairy margin program.

“It did have more people sign up for the new program and I think the bigger story here is that the program is going to pay just over $300 million to dairy farmers here in 2019.”

Galen says the program will be paying farmers for at least the first seven months of 2019 depending on their coverage level and if the old margin program was still in place, “It would not have paid a single dollar,” he says.

Wisconsin had the most dairy farmers sign up, followed by California, both with more than 80 percent of operations enrolled.  Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa were also among the top ten states.

Enrollment for the 2020 program opens October 7th

Brownfield interviewed Galen during the World Dairy Expo.
