Expect more refined sugar imports from Mexico

Bad weather in the U.S. has led to an agreement allowing more Mexican refined sugar into the U.S.  The USDA says they expect another 100-thousand U.S. tons of refined sugar to make up for production losses in America’s sugarbeet and sugarcane regions.

The USDA says the increase in Mexico’s refined sugar export limit will not change the amount of total sugar imports from Mexico, just the mix between refined and other sugar.

Many farmers in Michigan, Minnesota, and the Red River Valley have been forced to abandon nearly 150-thousand acres of unharvested sugarbeets.

The November 2019 World Agricultural Supply & Demand Estimates Report projected U.S. sugar production projection fell by 572-thousand short tons from the previous month, with weather concerns threatening further reductions.
