2023 expected to be bad year for soybean cyst nematode reproduction

There’s concern soybean cyst nematode thrived during this year’s hot, dry growing season.

Greg Tylka with the SCN Coalition says while the results of soil sampling aren’t known yet, 2023 will likely be a bad year for SCN pressure.

“We know from past experiences that there are two things that soybean cyst nematode thrives in, and those are hot and dry conditions. So you can imagine what I’m expecting the data to show us.”

University of Wisconsin soybean researcher Shawn Conley tells Brownfield he’s anticipating a bump in SCN populations.

“For whatever reason, when we have a drought or dry summer, the SCN just tend to populate and put out a lot of eggs.”

Tylka calls this an optimum year for soybean cyst nematode reproduction and says that probably means significant yield losses.
