14% of U.S. corn, 9% of soybeans planted

Farmers did make some corn and soybean planting progress last week.

Activity was slowed down in parts of the Midwest and Plains by a wetter, cooler weather pattern, which included snow in some northern areas and below freezing temperatures extending into southern parts of the region.

The USDA says that as of Sunday, 14% of corn is planted, compared to the five-year average of 11%, and 3% has emerged, compared to 2% on average.

9% of soybeans are planted, compared to the normal rate of 4%.

26% of U.S. winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, down 1% from last week, and 18% has headed, compared to 14% on average.

Weather in the northern Plains is impacting spring wheat planting, with 5% of the crop in the ground, compared to 12% normally in late April, and 1% has emerged, compared to the typical pace of 3%.

12% of cotton is planted, compared to the five-year average of 11%.

51% of rice has been planted and 30% has emerged, both ahead of the respective average rates.

18% of sorghum is planted, compared to 20% on average.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports are issued on the first business day of the week through the end of November.
