Wavering Waterways

Drought has resulted in the Mississippi River being shallow and narrow. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says that restricts soybean loads on New Orleans bound barges. Bushels per barge are reduced to keep them from hitting bottom and the number of barges per tow is fewer to accommodate the narrow channel. Although it’s still low, recent precipitation has provided some relief. September through February accounts for 80 percent of U.S. soybean exports.
