California snow pack much better than last year

This could be a sign of drought recovery, but there’s a long way to go.  California’s Sierra Nevada has a much better snow cover this year.  Officially, it’s below average, but still an improvement from last year.

A measurement Wednesday 90 miles east of Sacramento by the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program revealed more than 58 inches of snow on the ground holding 26 inches of water.

The Los Angeles Times reported that electronic readings taken Wednesday at about 100 stations across the Sierra Nevada showed about 24 inches of water in the California snow pack, or 87% of normal.  The reading a year ago was just 5% of normal – the lowest ever recorded and the worst in hundreds of years.
