4R winner gets higher yield with lower seed population

Darin Stolte, Olin, Iowa, with the 4R Advocate Award, at the Iowa Soybean Association Research Conf., Des Moines, Feb. 3, 2016.With the knowledge and the technology that Darin Stolte is adopting on his farm “I hope to be a role model to farmers in my community,” Stolte told Brownfield Ag News at the Iowa Soybean Association Research Conference, “to maybe expand my operation and teach them new things that they can use on their operations.”

In five to ten years, Stolte thinks that instead of applying nutrients to the whole length of a row, “we might be applying nutrients underneath of each seed to get better efficiency out of the nutrients than what I’m getting right now,” he said.

Stolte’s farm ground ranges from good black dirt, on which he’s boosted seeding rates, to what he calls “beach sand,” where he’s decreased seeding rates.  “And by doing that, I’ve reduced seeding populations and increased yield on lower producing ground,” he said.

Stolte was presented the national Nutrient Stewardship 4R Advocate Award during the Iowa Soybean Association Research Conference.  4R is translated to Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time and Right Place.
