Southeast Missouri corn yielding well

Corn harvest is underway in some areas, including Missouri’s Bootheel.  Matt McCrate, who farms near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is pleased with the amount of corn he’s getting.

“Irrigated corn is all running above 200 bushels [to the acre], non-irrigated corn is going to run into the 140 to 180 bushel range typically,” said McCrate from his pickup, just after harvest began.

Most of the corn ground in that area is under irrigation.

“However we had enough rainfall this year, our irrigation bill was quite a bit less because we just got so many timely rains,” he said.  “We really didn’t have to irrigate.  It’s one of the lowest years for irrigation I’ve ever seen on corn in southeast Missouri.”

While McCrate is pleased with the plentiful crop, he hopes for a recovery in the resulting lower commodity prices.
