Tillage practices changing

At the Ohio No-Till Summer Field Day held September 10, Bret Margraf with the Seneca County SWCD talked about tillage practices changing in Crawford, Seneca and Wyandot counties, a change that Margraf calls “unfortunate.”

“I say unfortunately because I’m sort of a diehard no-tiller, but it seems like there is more and more tillage that we’re noticing ahead of soybeans,” Margraf said. “I think a lot of it probably has to do with these new vertical tillage tools which you can run really fast, cover lots of ground, I think there’s a place for them, but I think it’s like so many things, it’s easy to use, so it probably becomes used too much.”

Margraf believes soil health needs to be talked about more along with the role cover crops can play in doing the work tillage can’t do.
