Proper use of the SMV

In case you weren’t aware – there is a proper way to display your SMV or Slow Moving Vehicle emblem.

Dee Jepsen, OSU Extension State Safety Lead explains.  “When you think about the rhyme and the reason – we want that symbol to be at the driver’s eyesight,” she says.  “That’s about 2’ to 6’ off the ground.  We don’t want to attach it too high to our tall equipment or real low, dangling and dragging the ground.”

Jepsen tells Brownfield the symbol should be positioned upward.

She says improper use of the symbol takes away the value of the emblem’s actual purpose.  “That is to improve safety on the roads.”
