Wheat yields all over the board

The Great Plains wheat harvest is moving quickly now, thanks to the recent stretch of warm and dry weather.  But yield reports out of Kansas and Nebraska continue to be highly variable.

Some of the best yields have come out of central Kansas, with some fields around Wichita reaching the rare 100 bushels per acre.  But further west, drought and a spring freeze decimated yields. Many fields around Garden City produced 20 bushels per acre or less.

Reports out of southern Nebraska indicate yields are generally averaging around 40 bushels per acre, with the best yields—up to 70 bushels—reported in southeast Nebraska, and the lowest yields—only 10 to 15 bushels—in south-central and southwestern counties.

The latest crop progress report indicated that Nebraska’s wheat harvest was 12 percent complete as of Sunday.
