No chicken statue

The City of Salem, Oregon has said “no” to a chicken statue. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) had requested permission to put a five-foot-five-inch statue of a chicken at the site of a traffic accident where a semi-trailer carrying 5,400 chickens to a slaughterhouse flipped. PETA wanted to put the statue there for a month to commemorate the birds that were killed in the July 9th accident.

A PETA spokesperson told The Oregonian the statue would “let people know that the best way to prevent crashes is to go vegan so chickens don’t have to make the trip to the slaughterhouse in the first place.”

The Salem city engineer working with the Oregon Department of Transportation determined the statue would cause too much of a distraction and be a hazard along what is a very busy roadway.
