SDSU on early season weed competition

Growers are being cautioned about early season weed competition by South Dakota State University researchers. They say SDSU research plots are looking at up to 40 bushel per acre yield losses because of early season weed competition. Corn tends to be more sensitive to that competition than soybeans.

SDSU says if weeds are controlled early, the crop can better compete with later emerging weeds — that’s why early application is so critical. Their advice is to begin controlling weeds within three to five weeks after crops emerge but in many cases pre-emergent herbicides are the way to go – especially for corn.
