Ohio sixth in floriculture

When it comes to the wholesale value of floriculture products sold in 2012, Ohio ranked sixth nationally, behind California, Florida, Michigan, Texas and North Carolina.

According to the Ohio field office of the National Ag Statistics Service (NASS) the estimated wholesale value of the state’s floriculture crops totaled $236.2 million, a 14 percent increase from 2011.

The ranking of crop category breakdowns for Ohio operations with more than $100K in sales were:

First, annual bedding/garden plants with $90.3 million in sales.

Second, potted flowering plants with $53.2 million in sales.

Third, herbaceous perennial plants with $48.3 million in sales.

Fourth, propagative materials with $24.4 million in sales.

Fifth, foliage plants for indoor use with 6.1 million in sales.

In Ohio the total covered area for all operations totaled 27.3 million square feet. In addition to the covered area, 321 acres of open grounds were used to grow floriculture crops in Ohio.
