Judge in BPI case steps down

A federal judge has recused himself from presiding over the defamation lawsuit by South Dakota-based Beef Products Inc. against the ABC network.  According to the Sioux City Journal, Judge Lawrence L. Piersol has stepped down because his daughter-in-law works as a producer on ABC’s Good Morning America.

BPI filed a defamation lawsuit against ABC in September, claiming the network damaged the company by misleading consumers into believing the product lean finely textured beef (LFTB) is unhealthy and unsafe.

The case has been reassigned to Chief Judge Karen Schreier.
