Are consumer attitudes about food and agriculture changing?

For the past several years, agriculture has been locked in a fierce public relations battle with animal rights activists, environmentalists and others who are generally opposed to “modern agriculture”.

So which side is winning the battle?  Is agriculture’s message resonating with consumers?

At the IDEAg Interconnectivity Conference in Altoona, Iowa, we visited with Terry Fleck, executive director of the Center for Food Integrity (CFI).  CFI is regularly surveying consumers and asking them for their views on farmers and ranchers, and the entire food system.

Fleck says while they have seen some subtle shifts in consumer attitudes over the years, consumers’ top priorities—food safety, affordability and nutrition—have basically remained the same.   And he says “humane treatment of animals” has become more of an issue with consumers.
