Learning more about conservation

Next week Indianapolis will host the 69th Annual Conference of Indiana Soil and Water Conservation Districts.  Indiana SWCD president Ray McCormick says they are spotlighting the All-Stars of conservation.  “The theme this year is The Power of Conservation:  Local Actions with Global Impact” he says.  “What we do as landowners and caretakers of the resource, has a global impact.  We have the opportunity in Indiana to make a profound difference.”

From water to air and soil quality, McCormick says Indiana is proud to lead the nation in conservation.

McCormick tells Brownfield next week’s conference is filled with opportunities to learn from some of the best.   “The national NRCS is now using some of the programs that are used by Indiana, and it’s becoming a nationwide movement,” he says.  “It comes down to focusing on soil health.”

He points out Indiana leads by example.  “Conservation practices have tripled every year in Indiana,” McCormick says.  “We hope that’s just the start.  We hope to have a cover crop on every acre of the land in the future.”

The Indiana Soil and Water Conservation Districts conference runs January 9 – 11 at the Marriott in Downtown Indianapolis.
