Using soy to help developing countries

The World Soy Foundation is a charitable organization that helps deliver soy protein and nutrition education around the world.  Nathan Ruby is Executive Director for WSF says their mission is has two parts. One of which is helping farmers understand that the product, the soy that they grow is a phenomenally successful tool in helping combat malnutrition.

Ruby says farmers produce part of the solution.  “The core base of that solution,” he says, “is protein.”  He tells Brownfield that’s what farmers produce – soy protein.  Ruby notes in third world countries there is no better way to get protein in children than soy based products.

Ruby says the foundation is challenging farmers to help.  With the Acre Challenge program, he says farmers can involve themselves in what the World Soy Foundation is doing by donating the proceeds of an acre of production.  “The calculation is simple,” he adds, “yield times price.”
