Expanded canal to improve efficiency

The people of Panama are investing billions in expanding the venerable waterway that has well served global commerce for a century. Within three years, the Panama Canal will be able to handle ships that dwarf the vessels currently plying the man-made channel. It means an improvement in shipping efficiency, but more has to be improved than just the Panama Canal. Ports all over the world, including most in the United States, can’t handle the ships that will, in 2014, be accommodated by the Panama Canal. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says the U.S. and other countries need to strengthen their investments in shipping infrastructure.
