Improving economy boosts farm profits

American Farm Bureau Chief Economist Bob Young says the economy is not where it should be, but it’s improving. That, he says, is improving the picture for livestock producers because of consumers leaving the house to eat and not being afraid to spend a little more on higher-end cuts of meat in up scale restaurants. Young expresses surprise that agriculture is doing as well as it is with the general economy as depressed as it is. “If you talk to folks from predominately rural communities or ag-supported communities, you know those economies are doing ok,” Young tells Brownfield. “It’s the urban economies that don’t have agriculture around to provide that kind of base that are in the biggest trouble, where the big foreclosures are going on.”
