Planting nears completion in Wisconsin

It was a cool, wet week in Wisconsin last week. The weekly crop progress report from the National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office say up to 2.23 inches of rain fell in parts of the state while temperatures were 2 to 5 degrees below normal. Overall soil moisture in the state is listed as 71% adequate and 14% surplus. It is stillquite wet in the southeastern corner of the state and quite dry in the northwest. Eau Claire is still 2.93 inches below normal precipitation; La Crosse is nearly an inch below normal. Green Bay and Milwaukee are an inch-and-a-half above normal and Madison is 5.63 inches wetter than usual.

Corn planting is now 94% complete in the Badger State and 71% has emerged as of Sunday. A lot of soybeans went in the ground last week with 79% now planted and 40% emerged. Reporters say both crops look good but could use some heat. Still some scattered frost in northerncounties.

With planting nearing completion, farmers are starting to knock-down first-crop hay with 19% cut as of Sunday, just slightly ahead of the five-year average. Rain slowed things down over the weekend.
