Patchy dryness, drought in parts of the Heartland

On the Plains, sunny skies along with somewhat cooler temperatures prevail across much of the region. Recent showers have provided localized soil moisture improvements central Oklahoma. Farther north, locally severe drought continues to affect western South Dakota and environs.

Across the Corn Belt, additional showers on top of recent locally heavy rain are further improving moisture supplies for corn and soybeans from eastern Iowa into Ohio. Soil moisture remains limited, however, across central and southern Michigan and on the triple point between Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois.

In the South, showers and thunderstorms linger in the northern Delta and along the central Gulf Coast. Moderate to severe drought persists, however, from the eastern Delta into the southern Appalachians.

In the West, heat has returned, increasing evapotranspiration rates and irrigation demands. Seasonably dry weather is promoting fieldwork in California, though several large wildfires remain uncontained in southern California and the Southwest. Monsoon moisture is on the increase, however, over the Four Corners region.
