Strong wheat yield reports continue in Kansas

kansas wheat harvest map 160622Kansas farmers and grain elevator operators continue to report some excellent wheat yields and quality.

Johnson, Kansas farmer Bart Parks says, so far, his yields have been five to 15 bushels an acre better than he had expected with test weights running around 65 pounds per bushel. Parks thinks his yields, overall, could top 60 bushels per acre.

John Falk with the Great Bend Coop Association in Pawnee Rock says some fields in his area are averaging 70 to 80 bushels per acre with test weights in the low 60’s.

Mike Schmidt with Pride Ag Resources in Dodge City reports yields on continuous wheat ranging from 40 to 60 bushels an acre, and acres emerging from summer fallow are yielding even higher. He says protein content has been highly variable, ranging from below average to some samples reaching 13 percent. Test weights have been averaging around 60 pounds per bushel.

The Kansas Wheat Commission says farmers are starting to wrap up harvest in the southern parts of Kansas while harvest has yet to begin in the state’s northern region.
