Heat builds into the western Corn Belt

On the Plains, heat continues to build despite showers and thunderstorms in central and southern portions of the region. Friday’s high temperatures could again approach 100°, particularly on the central High Plains. The heat is mostly favorable for winter wheat maturation and summer crop development.

Across the Corn Belt, showers and thunderstorms continue across the upper Mississippi Valley. Hot weather in the western Corn Belt is spurring corn and soybean emergence and growth, but cooler conditions linger across the eastern Corn Belt.

In the South, mild, dry weather is promoting fieldwork and crop development, though drought has developed or intensified over much of the interior Southeast. In contrast, locally heavy showers linger in southern Florida.

In the West, cooler air across the Pacific Coast States has ended the recent early-season heat wave. Showers in parts of the Northwest are easing stress on rangeland, pastures, and spring-sown crops, while showers and thunderstorms associated with a cold front have diminished over the Great Basin and Four Corners.
