Weather

A more active pattern for the Heartland next week

High pressure will maintain increasingly hot, humid conditions from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the central and southern Atlantic Coast. Meanwhile, a strong cold front will bring chilly air and locally strong thunderstorms to the Midwest, Northeast, and northern Mid-Atlantic over the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms will also develop in the afternoon heat across the Gulf Coast States. Out West, a cold front will continue to bring an end to the recent early-season heat wave; the front will reach the central High Plains early next week, when a more organized area of low pressure may develop. Scattered showers will linger behind the front as well, particularly in the Northwest, southern Great Basin, and central Rockies.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for a high likelihood of above-normal temperatures across the Rockies, Plains, and Gulf Coast States, with cooler-than-normal conditions confined to the Northeast and from central California and Great Basin into the Northwest. Below-normal rainfall will accompany the anticipated heat across the Rockies and Plains, with dryness extending across the Upper Midwest and New England. Above-normal rainfall is forecast in the Northwest and from the Ohio Valley into the Southeast, excluding central and southern Florida.
