Fieldwork delays in parts of the western Belt

Across the Corn Belt, warm, mostly dry weather in the Ohio Valley and the lower Great Lakes region is promoting corn and soybean planting activities that until recently had been delayed. Meanwhile in the western Corn Belt, showers and thunderstorms are disrupting late-season planting efforts.

On the Plains, stormy weather continues to hamper fieldwork and cause isolated wind and hail damage. Across the southern Plains, wetness is also a concern with respect to winter wheat disease pressure and harvest delays. However, abundant soil moisture throughout the nation’s mid-section is also benefiting rangeland, pastures, and summer crops.

In the South, the post-tropical remnants of Tropical Storm Bonnie are centered near the coast of South Carolina. Currently, most of the shower activity associated with Bonnie is occurring offshore. Farther west, however, a wet weather pattern persists across the mid-South, including the northern Mississippi Delta.

In the West, hot weather is spreading inland from the Pacific Coast States. Like Memorial Day, Tuesday’s high temperatures will approach 100° as far north as northern California. In contrast, chilly conditions linger across the central and southern Rockies.
