Weather

An active pattern continues

Active weather will continue across the nation’s mid-section through the Memorial Day weekend and into the middle of next week. As a result, widespread showers and thunderstorms could lead to additional rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts, throughout the Plains, upper Midwest, and mid-South. Some of the thunderstorms could result in high winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Meanwhile, lingering showers from the Sierra Nevada to the central Rockies will gradually subside, accompanied by a Western warming trend. Elsewhere, the formation of a U.S.-bound tropical cyclone is expected north of the Bahamas during the weekend. During the holiday weekend, rainfall associated with the tropical system should arrive across the middle and southern Atlantic States.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook 5 calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures in the East and West, while cooler-than-normal conditions should occur across much of the nation’s mid-section, including the central and southern Plains. Meanwhile, above-normal rainfall from the central and southern Rockies to the Atlantic Coast will contrast with drier-than-normal weather from the Pacific Coast to the northern High Plains.
