Warmer days ahead for the Heartland

Warmth will briefly overspread the northern Plains and the Northwest in advance of Pacific storminess. By week’s end, widespread showers (locally 1 to 2 inches) should ease short-term Northwestern dryness. Meanwhile, cool weather will linger for much of the week across the central and eastern U.S. Despite the cool conditions, dry weather should favor fieldwork across the nation’s northern tier, including the upper Midwest. Farther south, however, 5-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 5 inches from the southern Plains into the middle and southern Atlantic States.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures in most areas from the Plains to the East Coast, while cooler-than-normal conditions will cover the West. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation in the Northeast and from southern California to the southern Rockies will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in the Northwest and across the nation’s mid-section.
