Pilgrim’s Pride wants to lead organic production

Pilgrim’s Pride company officials say they are expanding into the organic chicken market with the aim of leading that market.  The Colorado-based and Brazilian owned processor says it plans to convert one of its plants into a USDA certified organic facility.

The announcement follows the company’s plans to grow is antibiotic-free business with the goal of representing more than 20% of antibiotic-free chicken production in the U.S.

The company’s CEO Bill Lovette says organic and antibiotic-free are two growing areas, while the traditional chicken market has had less growth.

Pilgrim’s Pride has operations in 12 U.S. states, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

JBS USA controls 75% of of Pilgrim’s stock.
